Back Pain: Office Work & Seating by city clinic
Basic Requirements for a more comfortable day in the office:
âIs the seat height adjustable? Adjust the seat height to fit in with what you are doing, paperwork, computing.
âAre your feet firmly on the floor? If not you need a foot rest, which is important for those with lower Back Pain problems since unsupported feet can cause more stress on the spine.
âAre your thighs supported? If there is pressure behind the knees when using the back rest, the seat may be too deep or may not have a waterfall edge.
âIs the seat tilt adjustable? Slightly forward tilting chairs can be more comfortable and can promote a better posture but too much of a tilt will produce a feeling of being âthrown outâ of the chair
âIs the back rest adjustable?
Back rests should be adjustable in both height and tilt. It should support the small of your back. Long back rests will support your upper back and shoulders too, but some people find the restricting.
âThe chair should be stable. Five star bases are recommended. Castors are useful for mobility, but unsafe on high seats or uncarpeted floors.
âThe seat padding should be comfortable. Check that it does not cause pressure at any points e.g. Back of the thighs.
âArmrests may be useful for some people but if they are not height adjustable they may prevent you from getting the chair under the desk.
âIf you are working at a computer, it is important to have the screen straight in front of you and to be looking slightly down at it.
âUse a copy holder or stand if you are typing from a piece of work.
âTake a break!! Getting up as often as possible will stretch the spine and improve circulation.
Acute Back Pain
Sleeping positions: The following are suggested positions for rest during an acute attack of back pain. Do not spend too long in the same position because movement is good for the muscles. Change position frequently but allow time for the back to relax in each position before moving out of it.
âLie on the pain-free side with both legs
Bent up and pillow between the knees.
âLie on the pain-free side with the painful
Leg bent up resting on bed.
âLie supine with a pillow under both knees.
âLying prone can restore the natural curve of the lower back. Begin with a pillow under the abdomen for a few minutes. If pain increases, change to another position.
âAs pain decreases remove the pillow. A pillow under the ankles may also help.
