What’s in Austin

Austin’s booming economy is seeing the rise of new landmarks in the city, both in the downtown area and the suburbs. There are, however, permanent fixtures in Austin’s landscape teeming with history and culture that cannot be totally replaced by new constructions.

The list goes on and on to include the Governor’s Mansion, the Capitol Building, the Austin Children’s Museum, the Austin Museum of Art, the Mexican-American Fine Art Museum, Esther’s Follies comedy club, the century-old Paramount Theater, and the stretch of entertainment spots along Sixth and Fourth Streets.

Downtown must see sight

But the top of the list are definite musts. In downtown Austin at Colorado Street is the Governor’s Mansion. More than a century and a half old, the Governor’s Mansion was constructed in 1856 and has since then remained to be the oldest home for a state executive this side of the Mississippi. Once providing residence for the Texan revolutionary hero Sam Houston, the Governor’s Mansion’s place in history has been etched in stone already. Despite an arsonist’s attempt to raze down this mansion in mid-2008, restoration has been ongoing to restore the structure to its former splendor.

Must see a bit out there

If you are the health buff fond of jogging or biking, you will definitely have to be there at Lady Bird Lake. The hike and bike trail is a must for health enthusiasts. The Lady Bird Lake, formerly called Town Lake, is just south of downtown Austin. Greening efforts to preserve the lake’s natural features prohibit motorized watercraft so the popular water sports are kayaking and canoeing. With the hike and bike trail bordering the lake for more than ten miles, both the land-locked and the water-borne enthusiasts meet at the vicinity of the lake on a regular basis. Along the south banks of Lady Bird Lake is Auditorium Shores, the park known for its open-air music fests, where music lovers get their regular dose.

Then there is the University of Texas at Austin campus. With the UT’s numerous statues and landmarks, it is one must-see that every visitor cannot forego. The main building is an historic landmark with its details, sights, and personalities. There are available campus walking tours if you would like to get more of a feel of the university grounds and buildings. One favorite is the tower observation deck tour, a guided tour of the university Tower, another landmark in architecture and interior design. Other highlights of the tour of the campus will be a visit to the Department of Computer Sciences, the Lyndon Johnson Presidential Library, the Texas Memorial Museum of Science and History, the ACES Building, and the Harry Ransom Center Art Gallery.

Needless to say, Austin is not lacking with sights to see, from parks to museums, to historical structures and landmarks to campuses and centers, from natural landscapes to man-made structures. But the above three, the Governor’s Mansion, the Lady Bird Lake, and the University of Texas at Austin campus, must definitely be included in if not on top of the list of must see Austin sights.
